For one, it's an extra layer of backup, and one you don't need the internet to access. Even if you already use cloud storage, portable hard drives can be an excellent choice. Images and videos take up a lot of digital space, and if you shoot even a reasonable amount, you'll find pretty quickly that you need somewhere to keep all this data. Ultimately, your computer's storage is only going to take you so far.
